Education worker Tokubo earns YWCA Crimson honors

In pursuit of a career coordinating health and human services for families, Jane Y. Tokubo's experience included the retail industry where she rose from clerk to managerial, to executive and buying positions.

She accomplished all of this before joining the Los Angeles Unified School District, first as a parent volunteer, then as a Healthy Start Coordinator.

Her long history of volunteerism shows a diverse passion, and devotion, having served and continues to serve in different capacities for a number of organizations, including but not limited to:

  • Member and Incorporating Officer of the GHS Art Collection Inc. since 2010.
  • Incorporating Officer for Harbor Gateway South Park, Inc. (HGSP, Inc.) since 2009, with the park opening in June of 2013.
  • Gateway PTSA CouncilBoard Member since 2007.
  • Member of Harbor Gateway Gang Task Force since 2006.
  • Officer and Board Member of GAP, Gang Alternative Program since 2005, serving as President since July 2013 .
  • Presenter of LAUSD District Conferences and Local District Meetings on Parent Involvement, arent Centers, Grant Writing 101 for Parents, Healthy Start, and Collaborative Partnerships beginning 1999.
  • Treasurer and Director for Gardena-Drug and Alcohol Abuse Prevention Task Force (G-DAAP) since 1995.
  • Founder of "Kodomo No Gakko," a Japanese Heritage Camp in 1995.
  • Treasurer and founding member of 186th Area Homeowners Association since 1993.
  • Director and founding member of 186th Street School Booster Club since 1991.

Jane has also received a number of special school awards, namely the California Distinguished School Award in 2012; the Golden Bell Award for Community Partnerships, 2011; three-time winner of the Title 1 Academic Achieving School Awards; the National Peace Games Award for Partnerships and Collaboratives; the LAUSD Arts Banner School; and as a Beyond the Bell Character Counts School.

  • California Assembly District 55 (Warren Furutani) Woman of the Year Award, 2011.
  • Gang Alternative Program Board Member of the Year, 2007.
  • Gardena/Carson Council PTSA Continuing Service Award.
  • PTA Honorary Service Awards in 1993 from 186th Street Elementary School and Peary Middle School in 2005.
  • California School Volunteer Program Outstanding Volunteer Award, 1997.
  • Gardena Valley Lions Community Recognition Award, 1995.
  • LAUSD School Volunteer Distinguished Service Award, Region A, 1994.
  • California State PTA Outstanding Unit Award 1993.

Tokubo continues to impact the community with training and professional development, ranging from Ethics and Funding; Autism Symposium to Bullying Prevention; Literacy to Peace Games; and Mental Health to Crisis Intervention.  Her work at 186th Street Elementary School is exemplary, sheer inspirational!  As the Healthy Start Coordinator her impact is intense, almost immeasurable as she continually reinvents and revamps herself and her programs.

Tokubo will join Dee Seto and Kathleen Barbosa as 2014 Gardena YWCA Crimson Award honorees.
